Students really enjoy the DK Eyewitness and Smithsonian books. These books are not only beautiful and highly researched, but they also tie into many of the curriculum areas and topics students use for research projects. The books are engaging with diagrams, photos, information boxes, maps and high gloss pages.
The goal of this project is to feature these highly researched books in research lessons and projects with my 9th and 10th grade students.
Students complete two to three research projects a year and having sets of the these books will enhance my curriculum and motivate students to explore. The glossy pages, maps, photos and diagrams really engage even the most reluctant reader.
My students vary in reading and ability levels and while some struggle, using highly engaging materials will help students of all levels engage with a research topic.
I am always look for materials and ways to engage students and get them excited about learning. These books will make a difference for they explore topics and research curriculum areas in Ancient History, American History, Science and Geography.
I teach in a school with a diverse population of students. Over 50% of our students are at or below the poverty level; many qualify for free or reduced-price lunch programs. However, all of my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Regardless of their challenges, my students continue to strive for and achieve at high levels. Giving my students engaging reading and research materials will increase their ability to experience, explore and excel.
