My Students

I teach at a unique urban school. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. I teach students kindergarten through fifth grade, and many of them have individual needs that do not allow them to attend a traditional school on a daily basis.

Many of my students have emotional and social issues, frequent medical treatments, safety concerns, difficulty in a traditional school setting and/or are homeless.

My students each face their own challenges every day outside of school. Some are grade levels behind and others are grade levels ahead.

My Project

My students need grade level appropriate novels to read together in small groups. The novels selected, such as The Bravest Dog Ever, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, The Lemonade War, and Esperanza Rising, cover a variety of genres and interests.

My students will have their own "Book Clubs" where they will read and discuss novels.

The novels will give my students the opportunity to participate in their own " book club" and to share what they think and how they feel about the books. They will also assist each other in reading and comprehending the stories. My students will learn to work together, voice their opinions, explain their reasoning and develop an appreciation for literature. I am hoping my students become bookworms.
