Located in New York City, our school is home to a wide range of diverse students. Students of all ethnicities, learning abilities, and socio-economic status attend our school. Many of my students (70%) qualify for free or reduced lunch and 30% qualify for special education services.
However, while my students may be diverse, they do have one thing in common: they are eager and willing to learn.
They love to hear stories and complete research about new, exciting topics. From this research, they create writing pieces and projects that bring their learning to life. For this reason, we are requesting texts that will support our students learning throughout our reading units.
My Project
Throughout the year, we engage in reading/writing units about many important topics. First, we study characters deeply and write our own stories. Then, we research Native American cultures and write informative essays, teaching others what we discovered. Next, we dive into books about social issues and learn how to become social justice activists. Finally, we wrap up the year with research on immigration, which is a subject many of our students have experience with first hand.
These books will help our students gain understanding about these important topics.
Not only will we read these books in read aloud, which is when we read together, but they will also be used individually by students. I know they will love these stories!
