My Project

My students are special because they are multilingual learners who are representative of a very diverse community here in our town. I work with them on becoming proficient speakers, listeners, readers, and writers. While they all have made great growth over the years, many continue to struggle to read on grade level. A lot of the books in their classroom libraries are too challenging for them to read.

Decodable readers, like the ones in this project, are valuable for beginning and struggling readers because they focus on phonics and decoding strategies, allowing students to practice letter-sound relationships and build confidence in their reading abilities.

By focusing on words that can be sounded out, decodable readers help students develop strong decoding skills, which are crucial for becoming fluent and accurate readers. These texts promote the habit of attending to the letters in a word as the primary means of recognizing it, which is essential for developing strong reading strategies.

When students can successfully decode the words in a decodable book, they experience a sense of accomplishment, which boosts their confidence and encourages them to read more.
