My Project

This year's fifth grade students are so multi-cultural and come from such different backgrounds and some even very difficult circumstances. I have students from Mexico, El Salvador, Portugal, and even Philippines. More than ever, we have been focusing on improving every child's social-emotional learning in this post-pandemic era. My school has carved out time in our daily instruction to implement social-learning emotional learning. I have been using whatever I can find to teach self-awareness , self-respect, and how to be kind and caring.

My students would REALLY benefit from the collection of "A Kids Book About Racism, Diversity, Empathy, Gratitude, Anxiety, Immigration, Being Inclusive and Belonging to further deepen their understanding of these concepts.

I would love to have literature circles around these topics and have the students work collaboratively to read them and reenact some skits to show empathy and diversity. These concepts are crucial and must be taught in the classroom to build understanding of different challenges people endure and have overcome.
