Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I need books to help lift voices of color in my curriculum and teaching practice and to educate students on the gender spectrum. The traits that we typically think of as defining a successful, well-rounded person – empathy, resilience, self-discipline, confidence – are all social and emotional skills. Giving my students time to explore choice books is important for social-emotional learning and will help with LGBTQIA+ representation in my classroom.

Let’s inspire the next generation of leaders with the ability to persevere through anything this complex world sends their way with books!

I strive to have more inclusive classroom materials to drive me to be a more equitable, just, and kind teacher. I want to present a curriculum that will help students see themselves in my curriculum and classroom. The books selected are a curated list of LGBTQIA+ books to affirm and reflect students’ identities and to help facilitate important conversations about equity, gender, healing, dealing with trauma, and belonging. Starting to talk about race, gender identity, equity, and social-emotional learning at a young age are critical to creating awareness and lasting change, and books are one of the most effective and practical tools for initiating these conversations.

Allowing my students to be inspired from model texts will create a classroom open to social-emotional learning and will deepen connections to the curriculum.
