Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want my students to improve their reading and writing skills, and to acquire a love for reading. Many of my students do not read much because they do not have access to age appropriate books. I would like to provide meaningful books that will inspired them to read.

Canoga Park high school is an urban school with a high transiency rate.

Most of my students come from a low income families and are primarily Title one recipients. Although they face social, emotional, and economic challenges, my students are hard workers and eager learners. Many of them understand that education is the key to having a better future. These past years we have suffered many budget cuts, and as a result my classroom is lacking in many essential supplemental reading materials. Fostering the love for reading is very important because it opens many windows, and provides opportunities for them to gain knowledge and understanding of various cultures. at this time, in order for me to accomplish this goal, I use supplemental materials that are already obsolete, damaged or have been lost. What I am in need of is to purchase reading books that will assist students in learning new vocabulary and books they can relate to.

My Project

My students will be reading 15 to 20 minutes in class everyday. As they read they will keep a journal where they will be writing unfamiliar vocabulary. As part of their homework, they will look up the meaning. They will also use their journal to write a summary of what they read, describe characters, themes, and develop questions to later ask in class so that we can discuss them. As for the students who are learning Spanish as a second language, I am requesting books that will allow them to practice the targeted language and then compare what they read in English so that they can have a better understanding of the story. They will also keep a journal where they will write down new vocabulary, find the meaning, and then practice them by creating sentences.

The donations to this project will improve my classroom because it will allow me to provide the tools that are needed to keep students interested in reading.

It will change their lives because not only they will improve their reading and writing skills but they will learn to appreciate books.
