Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are resilient, creative, bright and kind. Of course, like the rest of the world, they have been impacted by the pandemic. Some have lost family members, some mirror the anxiety they see in their parents' eyes. Some do not have access to someone regularly reading to them.

I want to inspire our students remotely!

I have continued meeting with my students via Zoom and reading to them regularly. It is so wonderful to still be able to connect with them and share stories. In the fall we will continue to learn online and I am looking for some titles that will inspire our future leaders.

My Project

Watching the news today can be so disheartening. We need our students to become the leaders of the future. I believe the best way to inspire the young ones is by reading them stories of people from our past who did just that. We will continue meeting daily virtually as we begin our school year. I am envisioning projects and activities the students can do from home after hearing these stories.

My students care about the world.

They want to help make the world a better place. They just don't know how to do that. Can one person make a difference? Martin Luther King, Jr. did, Sonya Sontomayer did as did Barbara Jordan. The books I am requesting show how these people used their voice to fight for change in their communities. The books Sofia Valdez, Future Prez is about a little girl fighting City Hall for a local park. Hey Wall is about a community who painted the walls of buildings to help make the community more enticing to visitors.

Through literature, we can inspire our students to step up and fight for what they believe in. The children are our future-help me to show them the way.
