This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I need books to help lift voices of color in my curriculum and to educate students on the causes and consequences of climate change. These books center diverse perspectives of people fighting for climate justice around the world. We have spent the last week looking at the 6 pages that our 900+ page textbook has dedicated to Climate Change and my students have all agreed that it is not enough.

My students are disappointed in the lack of urgency around climate justice and the omission of young, indigenous voices in our textbook.

They are hungry for the perspectives of those who live in frontline communities already experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change.

I strive to have more inclusive classroom materials to drive me to be a more equitable, just, and kind teacher. I want to present a curriculum that will help students see themselves in my curriculum and classroom. I also strive to have model texts that are accessible to all students no matter their reading level. These children's books will provide instruction to students who do not understand more complex texts, extension activities to students who finish work early, and will inspire our final project where students will take action for climate justice.
