This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my thirteenth year as a high school English teacher, and I would like to start this off by saying that I love my students. These bright and energetic teenagers engage and challenge me on a daily basis, and, like most teachers, there is nothing that I wouldn't do for them. One of the greatest challenges of a high school English teacher is finding ways to get students really engaged with books. Somewhere along their educational journeys, they have fallen out of love with reading. It has become a chore that they just don't do.

But my students love when I tell them stories, so I know that a love for reading exists somewhere inside them.

When I tell a story, they wake up. They become curious, ask questions, make comments, form connections. Stories can help them to learn to love to read. They just need the right bait to lure them back.

My Project

Why don't my students like to read? I have asked myself that question since I first began teaching. Even my own grown sons, who loved reading when they were little, lost their passion for books as they grew older. I don't need an answer to the question. I need a solution. After attending a recent professional development, and reading the book 180 Days, by Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle, I became inspired to help my students rediscover their childlike love of reading.

I want to beguile my students to return to reading by building a classroom library of high interest, student oriented, culturally relevant books that are a reflection of the young people who walk into my room.

I want to hook bookworms with a library where students can see themselves in the titles, and discover themselves in the stories. Where they can validate their life experiences and share them with others. Where they can try on new ideas, expand their horizons, broaden their world views, and begin to grow into the people they will become.

I believe that if I build it; they will read!
