My Students

My students in Sparks, Nevada come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a second year charter school and I admire the bravery of our families to boldly go into the unknown. My students are resilient and have gone with the flow through school changes due to Covid and smoke.

My Project

Students have experienced many emotions and loss through the process of COVID. As we work to build them up academically, we would like to use our literature circles as an opportunity to also grow their emotional awareness and empathy. We believe giving students an opportunity to read the struggles and survival stores of children their age will build their capacity for resilience. We want to let them know life is hard, but they are strong. Our 5th grade is working on a service learning project to raise funds to help a village in Sudan with water supply. The books we have chosen help solidify the idea that kids have the power to change the world.
