My Students

Maya Angelou once said: "Any book that helps a child form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.

I teach at a 4th -8th grade public school for the arts.

I have the pleasure teaching Language Arts and Social-Studies to ALL the 4th graders on campus. It is a very diverse group of about 100 students!

Our students come from all over the county - from every walk of life. The one thing that brings them together is their love of the arts. In my room, it starts with enriching literature, poetry and opportunities for the students to express themselves in their writing.

My Project

I would like to purchase 70 books to add to my class set of 30, so that all 100 of my students can have a copy of "Bud, Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis to read at home while they are in Distance Learning. "Bud, Not Buddy" is a book about an orphan boy who goes in search of the musician he thinks is his father. It takes place in the Great Depression, and depicts what life was like for African Americans during this time - especially African America musicians. I'm looking forward to my students seeing a boy their same age problem solve his way through adversity. I'll be teaching my fourth graders about another time in our nation's history when people had to persevere. I also would love to teach them a little about the Jazz music of the time.
