My Students

I'm an inclusion teacher at a Title I school in Hawaii. There might be negative stereotypes about the people on the Leeward coast of Oahu, but they are only stereotypes. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, from single-parent households and families with two working parents with multiple jobs, to families with comfortable living situations. With their diverse backgrounds, they all have a few things in common.

My students are enthusiastic, caring individuals who love learning and hands-on activities.

I teach an amazing class of eight and nine year-olds. Regardless of what life throws at them, they always show up to school ready to learn, do their best work, and cheer each other on. They help nurture each other's growth in and out of the classroom. They are determined to make each day better than yesterday, and I am lucky to call them my students.

My Project

Last year our students were locked at home behind a screen all day. Their only reading options were online books. This year, my students are so excited to get their hands on actual BOOKS! My school's library has had an overhaul and is being turned into a multimedia center after it had been neglected for years. My students only have my classroom library to be exposed to and borrow books.

I enjoy watching the joy in my students' eyes as they browse, finger through, and select new books to borrow from my classroom library.

The books I've selected have been chosen for a variety of reasons. Some are student picks, for research, and even suggested books. A large selection of these books are to help diversify my library or support or mental health so all of my students feel heard, represented and learn healthy ways of handling their stress and emotions. The Post-It tower will provide easy access to the sticky notes they use while reading books or taking notes.

I also need to keep my students physically safe from illnesses. The masks will help to do that since my students don't have an option to get vaccinated because they are too young. Lastly the roller stamp will keep confidential papers private.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my project and supporting my students!
