Books to Empower and Amplify Black Voices

Help me give my students books that amplify and empower Black voices, books that show Black children being children and books that allow me to teach the history of our country with an anti-racist approach.

My Students

My students are a vivacious and tenacious group of first graders that never want to stop learning. We have formed a class community based on communication, trust, friendship, growth and kindness. We listen to one another, talk through conflicts and set goals as a class. The last 3 months, my students have been thrown into a world of unknowns where the comforts of school can only somewhat be transmitted through a screen but they have not stopped being eager to learn.

My Project

Help me create a library in my classroom that amplifies and empowers Black voices, that allows my students to relate to characters and books that help me take an anti-racist approach to teaching. These books will be used as read alouds for the beginning of our learn at home journey next school year. Books will be categorized and a read aloud will be completed daily. These books will supplement the books that I currently have in our library and will ensure that all of my students are not only represented in our library but represented in different and positive lights. I am aiming to make my library diverse not only with the characters but the types of stories and information being shared.

Books are an extremely important tool in education and I know creating a library that is representative of my students will have an impact on my students both as learners and as citizens of the community at large.

I hope that with these books conversations can happen, questions can be answered and minds can be spared. I can't wait to share these stories with my class.
