Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a fun and energetic group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders that come from diverse backgrounds and households. They enjoy work that takes the everyday curriculum outside the box and working with others as much as possible. We are a Title I school and approximately 75% of our student population receives free or reduced school lunches due to financial hardship. Many of our students come from families that speak another language in the household as well. Despite personal challenges, my students enjoy the little things that make their learning a fun and memorable experience.
Our classroom stresses an environment of mutual support, respect, laughter, and hard work.
I encourage my students and expect them to support and encourage each other. We spend a lot of time in our classroom every day and so our room needs to be a place that is both inviting and comfortable, clean and functional.
My Project
Every morning at our school, we have homeroom period that starts our day. It is a very short period but it is used for announcements, attendance, news, and silent reading. My classroom has a book shelf with its own selection of books that the students can choose books from each week in addition to books from the school library, to read during this daily quiet time.
I am looking to elaborate upon our outdated, classroom reading selections in order to encourage students to read more books and foster a greater passion for different types of novels.
I am requesting a selection of 40 new novels ranging in levels and topics to appeal to all of my students with the hopes that they will be sparked with curiosity and desire to read all of the new selections!
