My Students

One of my favorite quotes comes from Dr. Seuss, best known for authoring stories like The Cat in The Hat and many others: "Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!" As a teacher, I am in awe every day with the way my students think, wonder, and respond to situations that arise in their daily lives.

Our school is culturally diverse, and our classroom is filled with differences; yet we have one thing in common, we are a close family.

We value these differences and see the opportunity to learn from all of our backgrounds and experiences. As in the story of "Oh, The Places You'll Go," we have made friendships with others who are on their own adventures. We will continue to connect with those in our school, our community, and globally. On our adventures, true friendships will form, and we will become a closer school family. Literature and art helps unite us, inspire us, and develop a love for adventures and the new places we'll go.

My Project

As a teacher, I am always looking for engaging read aloud books, which also teach vital life lessons for my 2nd graders. I have a lot of favorite authors, but one in particular is Julia Cook. Her books are entertaining and packed with lessons and skills that my students need to be explicitly taught. This project will help me use books to teach my students about important social skills, character virtues, and how to be a better human being for themselves, their family, and the world around them. Students need different strategies and tricks to use when they are faced with unexpected challenges. I am excited about the mini-lessons and discussions we will have after reading each of these wonderful books.

"One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world," is one of my most cherished quotes from the inspirational young woman, Malala Yousafzai.

These books will help me teach positive social skills to my 2nd graders, and will encourage them be more understanding, kind, and tolerant human beings.
