My Students

My students are a fun group of creative and active fifth graders. We live in a rural, isolated village in northwest Alaska, where many students practice subsistence hunting and fishing to support their families. Most of my students are Native Alaskan and are taught traditional native values.

My students love playing sports, hunting caribou, riding snow machines and four-wheelers, going ice fishing, and sledding.

My students are a diverse group, with strong ties to their families, their culture, and the land. In the classroom, they are an energetic group that enjoys working in groups, doing hands-on activities, and playing goofy games.

My Project

I encourage my students to read every day in our classroom. We have a library stocked full of books that interest my students, so they really enjoy this time. I also read aloud a novel with them every day, and once a month, my students get to choose a book to bring home and keep. They count the days to the next "New Book Day." All of this helps to make reading exciting and fun in my class.

The books in my project will be used for class read-alouds, and as gifts for the kids to keep and read with their families.

I chose them because they are from the low-cost site First Book, so they are an excellent value. They are also all high-interest, very well-written books. Three titles are Newbery winners. These books will continue to foster a love of reading in all of my students.
