My Students

Many of my students are just beginning to discover and love book that capture their imagination. I'm hoping this will be the year that forever changes them into lifetime readers.

My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds.

There are students who have fled war-torn countries such as the Ukraine, to first generation Mexican-Americans, to students dealing with Asbergers and even a student who is in the advanced stages of Muscular Dystrophy. Through all their struggles they are extremely resilient and come to school every day with hopes of a better future.

My Project

Many of my students are struggling readers and are not reading at grade level. The only way I have ever found to foster a love of reading for young adults is to put books in their hands I know they will love. My students need 50+ books like Boot Camp and The Vampire's Assistant that speak to them and are accessible. I am a voracious reader of young adult novels, and I am almost always able to find books for even the most reluctant reader. Former students who used to hate books are constantly coming to me for recommendations and to borrow books. Through this donation for books that my students love, I hope to continue to be a resource to students who are waiting for the right book that speaks to them and makes them see that reading (instead of being just another boring activity that is a necessary skill for the job market) provides a universal experience and helps us to understand more about humanity.

Over the years I have seen student after student claim to hate reading, and then a fire is lit after the right book is placed in their hands.

For many kids this is all they need to keep the reading fire burning the rest of their lives.
