My Students

I am very passionate about my job as a teacher because I get to expose my students to books and a love of reading. My school is a Title One School, and very diverse. I teach many different grades Literacy through the Arts, and am very fortunate to reach many students needing help in reading.

My students need to be interested and engaged before they are ready to settle down and learn.

I feel that right from the beginning I have to model and role play manners, respect for others as well as themselves. I teach pre-k through fifth grade and all benefit from learning the right way to behave and carry themselves through life. We are preparing all students for college readiness, and first it begins on knowing the right things to do in life. My students will begin to learn about rules and kindness the moment they step into my classroom.

My Project

I am seeking books to build a library filled with subjects on character education. Some will need to be read to and others will independently reach for a book themselves. I am seeking books on a beginning level for my youngest population to help them sound out words to begin to read. After reading and student discussions we always apply the lessons taught through a response through literature. My students will illustrate, draw, paint etc., tying in the lessons learned to have a respectful life as well as learning how to give of themselves to society to help out others. Some of the requested titles include a set of Elephant and Piggie books, Harry the Dirty Dog, and Jungle Bullies.

These books on rules, kindness, sharing, not being a bully and caring about others will be started in the beginning of every school year.

My students will not only learn to read, but to also read independently, and all will tie into learning about how to be a good person who thinks of others in their lives. Children need to be exposed and taught these manners, and once educated on it, then it needs to be practiced and used. Your donations will improve so many young lives.
