Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our kindergarteners need your help to become confident and independent readers! According to research, children learn to read best through systematic, phonics-based instruction. In my classroom, I spend a lot of time on direct instruction and guided practice on letter sounds. As a teacher is really important for my students to feel empowered and to see themselves as readers by giving them texts that will provide them with an opportunity to successfully apply known sounds. Most books are not intentionally designed to support specific sound patterns; however, these decodable readers will not only provide targeted practice but also help to foster independence and a love of reading.

According to research, when students are mainly reading leveled text with predictable sentence structures, they’re undervaluing and underusing their phonics skills.

This creates a really bad habit. Every book they pick up, their first strategy is, try to look at patterns, look at pictures, memorize. Decodable books encourage the right strategy of sounding out the words.

In our school, we are teaching reading skills using the Science of Reading methods which focus on phonemic awareness and decoding skills. Decodable readers are a great way to practice. Our school has level books that focus on sight word patterns but not decodable books. I am trying to build a decodable book library so I can send home books and work with them during small group instruction. A wide range of decodable books will ensure that every student can practice what they are learning right away during the independent time! Students need a lot of practice to become fluent in sounding out new words. Having decodable books like Nonfiction Phonics Readers, Laugh-A-Lot Phonics: Short Vowels, Long Vowels, and Blends & Digraphs will help my kindergartners become independent readers and fall in love with reading.
