Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our students are incredible young people full of creativity and potential. At our Title I school, we focus on creating a learning environment that celebrates their diverse backgrounds. We’re seeking to expand our library with books that feature authors and characters of color to encourage our students to see themselves represented in the stories they read, using these books to support their reading and writing development.

We aim to incorporate both fiction and non-fiction titles to help students improve literacy skills in a way that’s engaging and relevant to their lives.

The fiction titles will be used to foster a love of storytelling, spark their imagination, and help them connect deeply with characters who reflect their own experiences. Students will engage in writing exercises that build on the themes they encounter in these stories, encouraging them to develop their voice and write their own narratives.

Our non-fiction selections are inspired by Amber's Book Club (ABC), curated by Amber Grimes, a Black woman and music executive who champions transformative reading. ABC focuses on memoirs, personal growth, and self-transformation books that open minds and inspire change. These books will be used to develop critical thinking and analytical writing skills, guiding students in writing reflections, essays, and responses to ideas that expand their perspectives on self-discovery and their future goals.

Our goal is to support our students in becoming confident readers and writers who are empowered to express themselves and think critically about the world around them. Our students are resilient, curious, and eager to learn, and they deserve access to literature that both inspires and challenges them.

With your support, we can create a diverse book collection that strengthens their reading and writing skills, while connecting them to stories that resonate with who they are and who they aspire to be.
