This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach first graders at a Title I school in Troy, AL. My classroom is economically, socially, racially, and intellectually diverse and beautiful. I want to set EVERY student up for success!
I typically teach 16-18 first graders every year, with a diverse school demographic of Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, and Indian.
I have also had the joy of teaching students with special needs for the past 3 years within my classroom, and I strive to explicitly teach kindness and acceptance.
I find such joy in teaching first graders. There have been studies showing that kids begin to develop a world view as young as 5-6 years old. I hope and pray that my students come into my classroom as 6 year-olds, and lay a foundation of inclusion and love that will grow to flourish for the rest of their lives.
My Project
My students love to listen to books. I love to use books and drawings to implement Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and teach life-long character traits.
This project will help further expand my classroom resources to reflect the diversity in our classroom and our world.
Books like "The Power of Her Pen" about Ethel L. Payne highlight inspirational black women, and "What I Like Most" spotlights the day to day joys of a Chinese girl.
These books will go a long way in representing the differences of my classroom on the outside, while we also highlight the beauty and similarities that we find on the inside.
