Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population in Los Angeles, California. We are part of a Spanish one way bilingual immersion program.

We are a Title I school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds and diverse needs.

As a Title I school, providing essential learning tools is vital in supporting student learning.

My Project

Books are essential learning tools regardless of our learning environment. With distance learning one challenge has been the loss of access to classroom, school and public libraries. Students are reading daily but digitally. Apart from students needing a break from the screen, there is something special about turning the pages to a book, returning to your favorite part and reading a novel together.

Choosing books that focus on inclusion and equity is important for students to connect on a deeper level to literature.

I am requesting a class set of two titles that will support our bilingual classroom setting, reflect our cultural experiences and promote friendship. Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly will take us on a journey in which the characters will demonstrate how brave and resilient children can be as well as overcome a bully. Mañanaland by Pam Muñoz Ryan is a Spanish novel that will include my students' cultural experiences and traditions through the journey of an 11 year old boy, the same age as many of my students.

When students see themselves represented in literature it makes a lifelong impact on their academic and social-emotional learning. They are more motivated to read and continue reading. Students also learn valuable lessons when books include important topics such as adolescent friendships and hardships that characters their age overcome. Books have the power to carry these messages and make a great impact on children.
