Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Being at our school for several years, I have gotten the chance to really get to know many of the students in the school, including those I have never taught. Many of them have gone through seriously adverse situations and misfortunes that impact their everyday life, especially their education. I am amazed at how resilient they can be, and how they push through to the best of their abilities regardless of hardships that affect them. Being a fifth-grade teacher has shown me how fast some students have to mature. I have taught their younger siblings in previous years (coming up from kindergarten and first grade) and see how they take care of their family. Each child that I have gotten to know at this school has my heart.

I want nothing but the best for all of these students, and that includes giving them hands-on experiences that will be memorable to them.

My students need to be able to feel like school isn't another one of their draining duties or work. I want all of them to enjoy school and look forward to each day in my class, whether in person or virtually. They truly deserve the best!

My Project

This school year looks different for many, and teachers are striving to make remote learners feel as close to the classroom as possible. One way I want to do that is by continuing to read inspiring stories that will peak the interest of my fifth graders. Although we are currently doing a novel study together as a class, I don't want them to lose out on an essential part of any lesson: the picture-book read-aloud.

The books I chose will affirm positivity, determination, and a sense of community that is needed in these uncertain times.

I want my students to engage in the stories being told in these inspiring titles. I hope to get even the shyest students to partake in lively discussions or related writing. I also look forward to adding amazing books to my classroom library so that when we do return, the students are able to appreciate them firsthand.
