Hello! I'm writing in the hopes that you might help me fill in the gaps that exist within my classroom library. I teach a wonderful class of third graders at an under-resourced school. The classroom library forms the centerpiece of all instruction, and for years I have supplemented the meager library I originally inherited with my own money. However, many gaps still exist. Before school let out for summer, I painstakingly evaluated my current collection of books to come up with the list of titles I so hopefully call upon you to fund.
Reading is often taught as an isolated skill, more as test-prep than anything else, and having a strong and vibrant classroom library can do so much to counter that status. The books I am requesting would help in all subject areas, from social studies to science and the arts and all others in between. Reading can become the most useful and rewarding skill to a child so long as they are able to apply it to books that are exciting, challenging, and fun to read.
I love teaching so much, and I pour much of my money into this endeavor. However, the DonorsChoose community has proven generous in the past, and I am asking for help once again. For my students not to have easy and immediate access to the books I loved as a child--and to all the quality titles that have been published since--is unfair.
