This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Coming from all over the city, my students represent a variety of cultures, neighborhoods, ethnicities, income levels, and languages, making our school a truly diverse learning environment where students are constantly exposed to new ideas and perspectives.

To be honest, my students are pretty much the best.

They have bad days, like we all do, but on their good days, they are funny, sweet, intelligent, loyal, curious, determined, open-minded, and eternally inspirational. These qualities are rarely allowed to fully flourish, however, due to a lack of resources and the constant upheaval of our school district, not to mention the challenges that many face outside of their classroom lives.

My Project

For our third unit of the year, we read texts by and about people from the LGBTQA+ community as part of our exploration into social injustice. In the past, we have only had the resources to choose one novel, which limited students to just one perspective that was supposed to represent a wide and varied group of people.

We want to have our students exposed to as many different perspectives and authors as possible, and to see themselves and their classmates reflected in the literature we read.

To accomplish this, we are looking to add a broader range of books to reflect the diversity within the LGBTQA+ community. The books we want to add to the curriculum will give students the opportunities to approach this subject in a way that is right for their maturity level and their reading level.
