Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This ninth grade student body is 33% labeled with special education needs, a majority as learning disabled. My students are 14-15 years old, with little solid background in literacy, but lots of street smarts. Their critical thinking skills are ready to be put to the test with literary analysis that will be relevant to their lives. They are in desperate need of escaping to the world of reading and realizing that others also experience hardships. Right now, I have nine students wearing blankets instead of coats. Several live in group homes, have had trouble with juvenile detention, or are living out of cars.

My students are all heart and struggle.

These teens live in a rural community adjacent to a major metropolitan city. They are exposed to deportation of family members, just plain neglect and often violence. Giving them a book of their own with rich, meaty substance will encourage them to read for a lifetime.

My Project

My students are 15 year-olds reading at a 5th grade level. They want juicy content and characters they can relate to. You will provide recent well-reviewed and insanely popular young adult literature with cultural purpose for the kids. The kids will read 40 minutes per day in a silent reading block. The goal is to get them excited to read independently by providing recent titles and books other teens recommend. We want the talking about books every day at lunch! We hope to inspire a lifetime of reading just for the fun of it and talking about that reading with friends!
