My Students

I have requested books that help emerging readers become voracious readers. As a teacher, there is no greater joy for me than a student saying, "I still hate books, but I have to admit I liked that one book you gave me."

My students come from one of the poorest areas in California.

On average they read at a 4th grade level. That many of them make it to school on a daily basis can, at times, be a miracle. The area is plagued with gangs, crowded homes and a recession that's wreaked havoc on the local families. Despite these factors, my students are the most resilient people you will ever meet. There are small and big miracles happening on a daily basis at our school as students are finding teachers, clubs and resources that change their lives for the better. What inspires teachers most at our school is the hope in our students' eyes.

My Project

I teach a reading intervention class. I am a voracious reader of young adult novels, and I am almost always able to find books for even the most reluctant reader. Former students who used to hate books are constantly coming to me for recommendations and to borrow books. Through this donation, books that my students love, I hope to continue to be a resource to students who are waiting for the right book that speaks to them and makes them see that reading, instead of being just another boring activity that is a necessary skill for the job market, provides a universal experience and helps us to understand more about humanity.

The only way I know to turn a student from a reluctant reader to a lover of books is to lend them a book, and say, "Read it.

Whether you like it not, I can't wait till you finish so we can sit and talk about it."
