This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students don't fit into one category, which is what makes them special. They are persistent, adaptable, courageous, ambitious, compassionate, eager, goofy, intuitive, dependent, intelligent, young, creative and unique. However, the students in my classroom all have one thing in common: they attend a low-income, urban, public school. All of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Many arrive at school every day and we - myself and the other teachers - don't know what situations they may be coming from: single-parent homes, a homeless shelter, working all night, taking care of younger siblings, or even not eating since the last meal at school. In order to succeed in an educational environment, the basic needs of my students need to be met first. Unfortunately, that's not always the case and I cannot control my students' environments outside of school.
By donating to my classroom, you are helping my students meet their basic needs and giving them the opportunity to engage in academics.
My Project
How are my students going to learn to love reading if they can't find a book they even want to open? This project will help give students a broader option of books to choose from when they have free reading time.
If my students don't read more, they will continue to struggle with writing and discussing important issues in our city, country and world.
These concepts are all connected and are very important for young people to develop. My students need books to read that show characters that look like them, talk like them and experience similar hardships and success. Help give them the foundation they need!
