Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are ready to take over the world. They come to school each day ready to learn. These kids are able to put aside their struggles at home that may hold them back.

Our school is 98.4% free and reduced lunch.

Our entire district is considered 70% poverty. We try very hard to offer these students all of the resources and advantages that other schools often receive in more affluent communities.

Although my students face many challenges that are unimaginable to most, they still greet me each day with a loving smile and eagerness to learn. They never let their circumstances bring them down, and they thrive as best they can when given the resources and opportunities to do so. They make my heart full and teach me every day of the year.

My Project

We are transitioning to a new reading program that will compliment our writing program. This will help set our kids up for success in reading and writing. They will be able to choose from a wide range of books that are on their level to read and study throughout the week. These books will help build our classroom library so that students can find a book of interest and not be stuck reading the same books over and over.

Because we are a very low income school, many of our students do not currently have and have never had books at their disposal.

By giving them a vast collection of books to choose from, the students will hopefully begin to love reading and learn while doing it!

With the varied content areas, students will be able to learn about topics of which they are not currently familiar. The students will be able to readily choose between fiction and nonfiction books on their levels. Because my class is 94% ESL, the students will also be able to add to their vocabulary and better develop their language skills.
