Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I had the fortune of meeting my students as 7th graders because I had good ties with their previous teachers. They are a very talented bunch, energetic, eager to learn, and dedicated. As 8th graders, I am sure they will remain as resilient as they were last year. I know they are engaged when the material is meaningful and rigorous. They vary in their skill sets, but they all have major strengths.
Most students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program.
Families have financial difficulties, yet this does not stop them from wanting the best education possible. Sometimes basic needs are not met, and this may pose as an issue but with your assistance we can supplement their needs.
They live in an urban environment that can be violent at times and some may have seen things that some of us experience from the news. Despite their challenges with poverty, they are bright and insightful children who enjoy discovering.
My Project
With your assistance, I will have a new library that includes graphic novels, books about refugees, narratives by middle eastern characters, immigrants, women and other high interest novels. My students will be reading 4 core novels in class, but these books will help them make better thematic connections.
I would also like a class beanbag to include in my reading corner.
I want to create a comfortable yet academic environment.
I want them to be exposed and educated about issues that are happening all over the world and to feel compassion towards others, while opposing the current xenophobic rhetoric we are all experiencing. The best way to make immediate connections to others are through their stories, historic fiction and narratives. Here is where my students will be able to make connections to young people all over the world.
I know that by consistently providing an engaging textual environment, they will feel inspired and actively want to read more. If they have new books, they feel proud of being the first to read them. I want to provide quality material because they deserve to access counter narratives and new voices.
