My Students

I found a way to encourage my students to read like never before. Books on Film! I have a reading club that reads novels with film adaptations. At the completion of the novel. We settle in with popcorn and watch the film adaptation which opens up a whole new lesson on literature.

My students are from our city's largest and poorest housing project.

They do not have a passion for reading when they enter my classroom in September, but by June, they are avid readers thirsty for books and the adventures that books afford them. I am always looking for new and exciting ways to increase their reading and interests. They love movies and I thought that was a great incentive; however, budgetary constraints don't allow us to attend the theater. So now I bring the theater to them, but only after we've read the book. They are always eager to read the books and look at the movie because they have a sense of accomplishment and the reward is fun and interesting. Perfect combination for sixth graders.

My Project

Over the years I have accumulated several novels for my students. Typically, with lots of direction, persuasion and guided reading. However, once I created Books on Film, my students are eager to read the books so that they can watch the movie version and have a book talk where they compare their preference and what they would have done differently if they had created the film adaptation. Talk about higher level thinking! They also love the book talks that follow because it gives them opportunity to be a critic. This project will allow us to view the movie in class. While last year was a success, we met a plethora of challenges with the multimedia in our school. My classroom computer was too old to support the DVDs, so each time I wanted to show a movie, I had to play a laborious and time consuming game of seek and find. My colleagues were generous with sharing their equipment but I was constantly seeking new people to share so that I wasn't always relying on the same person.

Granting this project would allow me the flexibility to show movies when my students are ready instead of waiting for the teachers who is loaning me her equipment.

It would also give me flexibility in how I incorporate the movie in my lesson. For example, movies with great beginning can be used at the beginning of the novel to whet the students' appetites for the reading of the book. My students wouldn't have to wait for the fun to begin and my lessons could move at a better pace.
