My Project

Our classroom, made up of diverse learners from a variety of cultural backgrounds, begins each school day with a read aloud. This might be my favorite part of the day. Students are awake and eager for the day's lessons, and they become entranced in the morning's story. They make connections to the author's words and the character's actions. They laugh at the jokes and gasp at the suspense. You can feel their love of literacy.

Imagine a classroom library where every student sees their own culture, their own color, their own story represented and celebrated through literature.

Imagine how much more excited we could build in literacy; how much more of a connection students can make when they read about someone who culturally looks like them. When we read about characters from all parts of the world, we have an opportunity to learn more about each other, and we realize how much we actually have in common.
