My Students

I would like to enhance the opportunity for students to experience literature and to develop a love for lifelong learning through reading. "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said one. The man who never reads lives only one." George R.R. Martin

My high school is set in a rural area with many of the students participating in agriculture and farming.

There is a high poverty rate in the area, which makes building a library extremely important for the students. I want to be able to offer a variety of reading materials at school because most students in the area are unable to purchase books on their own. There is a lack of diversity within the student population, so exposing the students to literature of different cultures can provide a connection to the global population. Also, due to students becoming so inundated with social media, they rarely experience or gain the skills needed to read lengthy, rich literature. Providing a plethora of strong literature for the students to explore will give students a broader world view to encourage higher level thinking.

My Project

My students will be given sustained silent reading time during class to develop strong reading skills and to commit to consistent reading. They will communicate with other students about themes they find in their books. Connections they make with the text will also be shared in class with other students, in personal writing, and in public blogs where they will analyze book structure, voice, and meaning. I hope to create an environment in the classroom where the students encourage each other to read books they have read, and students will become leaders in reading challenging texts and learning how to communicate discoveries they find in books.

Studies prove that consistent reading improves the ability for students to learn in all content areas.

Reading enriches the lives of students and allows them to relate to others in the world and to learn the importance of self-reflection and learning life lessons through the characters in the books. Human connection is powerful. Reading provides an avenue for students to deal with difficulties in life and to connect to other students through communication.
