My Project

For this project, I am requesting copies of the novel Klara and the Sun to read in my English classes. Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun is an excellent choice for high school English students because it delves into complex themes like technology, humanity, and the nature of love. The novel follows Klara, an Artificial Friend, as she observes human behavior and navigates questions of identity and belonging. This exploration of what it means to care for others and be part of a community is particularly relevant for teenagers, who are developing their own sense of self and relationships. The book also raises ethical questions about technological advancements, which will spark rich classroom discussions during our Socratic seminars. Students will read and annotate the novel in preparation for these discussions.

Lunar New Year is a time of renewal, reflection, and the strengthening of familial and communal bonds, which parallels Klara’s journey of understanding love and sacrifice.

Just as Lunar New Year emphasizes honoring tradition and relationships, Klara’s story encourages readers to value human connections and the intangible qualities that make life meaningful. Reading this novel during Lunar New Year will help students connect to different cultures and traditions, bridging global perspectives.
