Help Mrs. Deraps

I teach English to at-risk high school students in rural Maine. These kids are the salt of the earth, but have had some pretty awful life experiences.

I work with students who come from the poorest, most unpredictable home situations. They cannot always count on having a parent or guardian who is there for them and safe. They have not grown up with the idea that a solid education is a positive goal to have. Therefore, my students are in danger of dropping out and continuing the cycle of poverty and hopelessness. In four years of working with these same students, I've never seen them so excited over a book. I funded the first set of books with my small budget but cannot purchase the next book in the series. My students really, really want to read the next book. I would love to keep the momentum going and allow this series to keep their interest in their senior year high. This can be a dangerous year for at-risk students and I don't want to lose any of them so close to the finish line!

The first book in the Hunger Games series is powerful. It's about a girl who lives a life that is similar to the realities my students faces every day. The main character is a girl who grows up in a rural area with little food. Like my students, the next meal is not always a guarantee and she has to hunt to find food for her family. She is also similar to my students in that she provides for her younger sibling and takes care of her ailing mother. Her father is dead, and many of my students have lost parents as well. My students love this character. I'd love to show them how she grows in confidence and power in the second book. Maybe they'd be inspired to grow with her!

Your donation will help to ensure that these twelve seventeen and eighteen year-old students are able to continue to enjoy literature. This may be one of the last experiences of their public education. Some of these students are going on to serve our country in the military and others are already teen parents. A few are planning on community college. All will benefit from an exciting senior year that is rich with discussion and literature that leads to personal connections and encouragement. Thanks in advance for your kindness and community spirit!
