My Students

My school is in a low-income area with a high ESOL and special education population. All of our students are entitled to free breakfast and lunch.

My students are a very energetic group of second graders who are glad to be back into our school building and eager to learn and find new ways to learn after being on a computer all day last year.

In the past my students discovered two authors whose books we fell in love with. Julia Cook, and Diane Alber, have helped us overcome anxiety, anger, and feelings in general. I have used many of their books to help my students during situations that have ocurred both in our classrooms and our world.

My Project

My classroom is lucky enough to have a very large library. However, my students are growing up in a society where they are encountering many inappropriate behaviors and need good models to help them deal with behaviors.

This project will make a difference to the second graders I teach because it will help engage in discussions and follow-up activities to become better citizens in our world.

With the help of the Mary Ninh and Diane Alber books, I can continue to help explain expected behaviors and appropriate social skills in a child-centric way. From problem-solving, stealing, bullying, making friends, as well as others, these books will help my students learn proper social skills.

With the Ink and Pocket charts, I can increase my student's ability to print out their own writings and display vocabulary words for our new stories.
