My students need eco-friendly pouches to carry books to and from school, and designated bins for each child at school; giving our books safe places when not being read.
Being trusted to take home a book from the classroom is such a privilege and honor to a child as they bridge the connection of home and school through reading. By having a designated pouch, the experience is that much more important. During school, students need bins to keep books they are reading handy.
Our school is very eco-centered.
We recycle, compost uneaten food from lunch, and collect rain water in large barrels for watering. In the past I've used zippy bags to transport books home, but this is so wasteful and goes against the value of reusing that I try to instill in my students. They are the future solvers of our many eco problems created today.
My Project
The entire project centers upon reading and giving tools to help students begin the process of being organized at school and at home in an eco-friendly way. Having a place to put items is so important to kindergarten students as they each learn to work and learn in a community of others.
I have requested eco-friendly pouches for my students to carry books to and from school, and designated bins for each child at school; giving our books safe places when not being read. The pouches and bins will be used yearly and will not be creating additional waste in our landfills. At our school we recycle, have rainwater collection bins, and compost during lunch. Students would be aware that they are using eco-friendly practices with their books.
Having a place for each child to keep books that they are each personally reading lets young children have ownership of their learning and provides an important place for the important tools of learning.
