My Students

My students are curious. They ask questions, observe the world around them, and have a great love for reading. Even though my students face many challenges at a young age, they still have a bright smiles on their faces and are always ready to learn. They enjoy reading a variety of books and are learning how to have book discussions within the classroom. They enjoy accessing our classroom library, but they do not all have books at home that they can read outside of school time and discuss with their Reading Buddies.

Research shows that as children spend time reading daily there is improvement in the area of fluency, comprehension and written expression.

As a teacher my goal is to provide each child in our program with sufficient amount of books where they can spend their time reading books in the comfort of their home. This would enable them to develop a love for reading, confidence from spending time reading daily and help them get better with their conversational skills , as they share what they have read with their reading buddies during our book discussions.

My Project

At my school, we lead a Reading Buddies Program in partnership with the nonprofit organization, Literacy Inc. The Reading Buddy Program pairs older students with younger students for 20+ sessions of one-on-one reading. LINC partners with local schools or after-school sites and works with administrators and faculty to provide the LINC Reading Buddy Program.

The one-on-one pairing improves cross-grade relationships, builds confidence for both readers and provides the older partner with experience in organizing materials.

Focusing on reading aloud to each other, followed by an organized critical response (oral and written). Students create a reading goal and maintain a literacy portfolio that tracks progress.

My goal is to provide students with books they can take home and read so they can feel successful. I want my students to develop a love for reading. If students feel successful reading the books on their level it will instill a love for reading and they would desire to want to read more.

Each student gets to pick the books they would like to read. They can take it home and place it in a special place and have access to reading the book of their choice. According to the Educational Testing Services, students who do more reading at home are better readers and have higher math scores.
