Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at an urban alternative high school. My classroom is incredibly diverse. Some students are refugees from war-torn countries. Some are Native Latinos representing generations of their families. Some have learning challenges and some are just bored in traditional classrooms. Others have fallen behind in their studies due to illness or work obligations. They have come to our school because they need more support than other high schools can offer them. They can no longer afford to be square pegs trying to fit into the round holes of traditional high school.

My students believe in the power of education.

They don't give up, despite significant challenges. They understand the promise of education and believe that it will transform their lives. As different as we all are, we are united by our love of our community and our belief that education is power.

My Project

These books will enable our students to understand more about the complex relationship between humans and the environment. They are high-interest and will enable our students to improve reading fluency and critical thinking skills.

Very soon our small school will be embarking on a new journey - we need your help.

We are ditching our old methods and trying out a project-based approach. This hands-on method will empower students to learn about natural resources in our community. They will analyze how community members utilize a local river and develop a community presentation wherein they will provide tips for sustainability. These books will provide a framework for understanding environmental issues and ecosystems.

The project integrates all content areas and will be such an amazing opportunity for our students! We will canoe, poll the community, invite local nonprofits to speak, write for the local paper, and develop environmental suggestions for our neighborhood.

With your help, our students will be empowered to make real positive changes! Thank you for your generous donation. Your gift will benefit many, many families.
