Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the complicated language in "Treasure Island"? This book uses that same language, but adds pictures to help the students better understand what is going on. The pictures also excite these young readers, and keep them reading.

The students are an active, energetic 4th grade class, in a medium-sized charter school.

The next generation of students are also extremely active, and more interested in sports than academics. I am always on the look out for books and materials to make connections, and keep them motivated to learn.

My Project

I can motivate these students to learn in a variety of ways, and new and exciting resources help make this happen. I have found that books like these help make a connection between classic literature and current student interests. This way students are excited to read, get the practice they need (to keep developing as readers), and learn how literature can convey messages across time.

I have watched young readers struggle through the language in "Treasure Island." I have helped through discussing the book and vocabulary instruction, but there enthusiasm is short-lived.

It all too quickly becomes a struggle to keep up participation, especially in ESL students who struggle with modern English.
