Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

All of my students start the year off reading a year or more below grade level. During the school year, I provide intensive reading intervention and most of my students make a great deal of progress closing the gap between their current reading level and grade-level expectations. With their increased reading abilities, my students gain confidence in their reading and truly enjoy engaging with books. However, when they leave school in June, many do not have the opportunities or resources to continue reading over the summer. Without continued practice of the literacy skills they worked so hard to develop during the school year, their progress not only stalls, but often regresses by the time they return to school in September.

Research has shown that younger children and children from low income families are disproportionally affected by “summer slide” (my students fall into both categories).

Therefore, I would like to provide my students with engaging books to bring home over the summer. If my students are excited about the books they bring home, they will be more likely to continue reading. I want to provide my students with a selection of high-interest, fiction and non-fiction books. With the books requested in this project, each student will choose 2-3 books to bring home over the summer. My students will be thrilled to receive brand new books of their own!
