Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am very excited to be teaching kindergarten as a special education teacher this year in an integrated, co-teaching classroom. My classroom consists of ten students with special needs and fifteen students of mixed English Language Learners and general education students. Students are not only diverse academically, but economically and culturally as well. My students face many challenges everyday, in school and out. My school has a very large population of students who live in poverty, as well as children in shelters. My students are super excited to learn and they do their best every day.

These past two years has brought many challenges to teachers, students, and their families.

Many students did school through a full remote or a blended learning model. As things begin to return to normal and all students returned to in person learning in September, there are new challenges that we face.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of books to teach my students about empathy, communication, cooperation, respect, and citizenship to help them with their Social Emotional Learning. After nearly two and a half years of interrupted learning, where school was shut down and students transitioned to full remote and blended learning, it has dramatically impacted student's social and emotional well being.

The books chosen for this project have been hand picked to support my students in cooperation, communication skills, respect, empathy, and being a good citizen to support their Social Emotional Learning!

Each of these books will be paired with lessons and projects throughout the school year to help my students learn these skills and connect with each other.
