Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The first time I take a class of students outside to observe birds, it's more spectacular to watch them than to watch the birds themselves. Students shout with surprise at every Cardinal or Starling they see. "I had no idea we had so many birds around our school!" is often a common theme. I want to keep their passion for birds going with trips outside and our time in the classroom.

Telling stories in science is one of the most effective ways to catch students' interest.

That is why, in addition to the field guides, I am asking for a variety of children's books about birds. I want my students to develop a passion for the stories birds have to tell us about the world and ourselves. These books will be accessible for even the newest English Language Learner and will inspire students to write their own narratives about the birds they didn't even know were there.
