Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students have never read an entire book from start to finish on their own. It's important to me that they see reading as something they can turn to when they want to turn on their brains, are curious, or have extra time. Having quality books in the classroom facilitates this.

My students are 98% Latino.

They live on the west side of Chicago and 100% receive a free lunch. Many of them believe that they don't deserve nice things or that they aren't important. I wish to disabuse them of this notion and show them, through a well-stocked library among other things, that they are actually quite deserving and very important.

My Project

They will read the books! My students will have the opportunity to read a wider variety of texts. In my classroom, one class period per week is devoted to Independent Reading. Students choose their own books for Independent Reading. If I can get the right book in a student's hands during that class period, the result can be a much more motivated student by the following day!

Reading can be a lifelong activity that enriches a person's life and outlook.

Many of my students have never had a role model that reads. They don't see reading as a viable option for something to do with their time and/or excess energy. Having a rich classroom library and creating a safe place for students to read can introduce them to the notion that reading can be a positive force in their lives regardless of other circumstances.
