My Students

Approximately 400 students come through my classroom each week. Each one is full of excitement and love, not only for their artwork, but also for the lessons and knowledge they recieve when they come into "Miss Art's room". Each lesson in my class is connected to literacy in some way.

My school is comprised of minority students who come from families who suffer from poverty and live in an environment with high crime.

There is a low emphasis on academic achievement. A high amount of efforts have been made to create a safe environment and a thriving school. My school is full of extremely talented students who enjoy and love art and art has had a positive impact on them academically. In spite of the surrounding neighborhood and personal challenges, my students are learning and expressing themselves in great ways through art and writing. Currently our school is in the process of transforming from a low-performing school into a 90-90-90 school. A 90-90-90 school has at least 90 percent minority students, 90 percent low-income students, and 90 percent of students who are academically proficient. Art reinforces the reading and language skills students learn daily at school.

My Project

These books will be extremely beneficial in my art room. Currently I am in the process of trying to create an art library in my classroom, as well as become a center-based art room. My students are signifigantly more succesful when learning in smaller groups. I am trying to create an environment where this is possible, by creating learning centers for students to work at individually. One of my centers is my carpet area, where my books are located. My students will have the opportunity to read these books during centers. I also have a literacy focus for each art lesson. Many times the literary focus includes reading a book. All of the recources I am requesting will be used for a literacy focus in different lessons. My students love to be read too! I have several students that have been able to learn difficult language arts, reading, and math skills through art. These books will provide opportunities for students to not only learn more about the arts, but also reading and language arts.

Donations to this project will greatly improve my progress to having a center-based art classroom.

This project will also increase the connection between art and other subject areas, which is an important focus at our school. Many of my students do not have any books at their homes, so it is important for us to provide every opportunity for our students to have books whenever possible. These books will give my children a wonderful recource in an environment they love.
