Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Since the pandemic hit and for the two years afterwards, a lot of the discretionary budget at my school went to immediate relief, which was understandable. However, this means that the selection of books in our school library has been stagnant for the past four years, and in that time the library has lost a lot of books to regular attrition (it is an elementary school library, and kids move around all the time without remembering to turn in their books before they go), as well as the normal wear and tear. People don't think of books as having an expiration date, but the more out of date a book gets, the more irrelevant it becomes to kids who want to read exciting new stories, and the harder it is to get kids motivated to learn how to read.

The pandemic really cratered our kids' reading scores, particularly reading comprehension, and they haven't bounced back yet.

As the librarian, I have an important role in getting kids interested in finding something they want to read, something that interests them and pushes them to keep going and reading more. The more they read, the more they find something enjoyable in a book, the more their literacy and understanding goes up. The books I have chosen are part of the list of books that I want to acquire for the kids because they're replacements for books that got lost or damaged, or they're sequels to books they already like and are popular. Some are here because the kids specifically requested them, and others are here because I want to address multicultural needs. I would appreciate any help that could be sent my way to start putting a dent into this need.
