Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach in rural Selma, CA. My students come from all different backgrounds. There is a high number of English Learners with Spanish and Arabic being their first language. There are also a high number of academic needs. My students have been home (like most students) for a year and a half.
They need motivation and encouragement daily and they need to learn to love school again.
They need to learn to love learning. They are excited to be back but their learning needs are intense. I want them to thrive. I want them to love reading and see learning as an adventure. I currently have 24 students but the number changes weekly. I am trying to create an environment where they are excited about what we are doing and learning.
My Project
In order to help my students grow a love for reading, I have been bringing in art and other activities that relate to what we read. I found a project online created by Creatively Teaching First on Teachers Pay Teachers called Book-Nics. This project incorporates food and reading. Each month has a different snack we will create together and enjoy. The best part is each snack has a list of books that can go along with it. These books I am requesting are about half of the books that are recommended but it is the perfect amount to start this project.
My students' love of reading will continue to grow each month as they absorb (read, listen, consumer, devour) the books and enjoy their snacks at the same time with each month's Book-Nic.
They will be able to access the books we read in class and there will be a list of the other recommended books that they can check out in our school library. My hope is they will look forward to checking out books and start making connections to the real world and hopefully, see reading as an adventure.
