My Students

The ELL (English Language Learner) population in my school is growing at a fast rate. I am the only ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher in the school, and I also coordinate the program. Many of my students would benefit greatly from strengthening their home language literacy.

My ESL scholars are motivated to succeed, and in the future they WILL succeed.

I want to give them all of the tools they will need to be successful. In this day and age, being bilingual is an incredible asset. There used to be only 19 ELLs in the school. Now there are almost 70. The ELLs come from an array of different countries, and speak various languages including Spanish, Arabic, and Bengali.

My Project

My ELLs will be able to read these books during DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. They will also take them home to read with their families. My students need to strengthen their literacy in English AND their home language. The skills they possess and develop in their language are transferable to English, and vice versa. The bilingual books strengthen both languages, and show the connections between them. Another HUGE reason I want these books is so the children can go home and read with their parents. A great number of their parents are not proficient in English, yet are literate in their home language. These books will also strengthen the bond between the children and their families, and will help them ALL improve.

I know the way a face lights up when a student is finally able to understand what they are reading.

I want all of my ELLs to feel that success, and grow from it. I want our families to be involved, and feel more connected to their children's education. These books are not the be-all and end-all, but they are an incredible start.
