My Students

My job is to make my students think critically about the world and about themselves. However I need books to help me do that. I need books that go beyond the safe, traditional, and not so diverse assigned literature textbook. Reading O'Brien and Kushner will help me do that.

I teach at a large urban high school In Los Angeles.

My students are socio-economically and ethnically diverse as well as diverse in ability and intellectual curiosity. That makes my job both interesting and challenging and using a Socratic classroom as I do, makes each class unpredictable and from an existential point of view "free." I am a taskmaster when it comes to reading and writing. Students must write about what we read and discuss before we go on to the next book or project. We start with the Greeks and are working our way to contemporary writers and thinkers. I like to think of my classroom as a history of Western thought.

My Project

We will write, discuss, and even perform some of the texts, "Angels in America" and "The Things They Carried." By the end of the unit, students will be able to write for two whole class periods (without notes) on the given question conceding the text. In addition, each student will present an independent research project to the rest of the class related to the book. For example, in our discussion of Doctorow's RAGTIME, projects were presented on feminism, trade unions, immigration, Ellis Island, trusts, minstrel shows, anarchism, to name just a few. This is research they do on their own which requires sufficient mastery of the subject to present to the class without notes.

A literature anthology given to students in a public classroom presents texts that are not only edited to eliminate the troubling and the ambiguous, but are prejudicial in their very selection.

I can xerox the Whitman and Dickinson poems that have been left out but then we get to the next unit and again the question arises what needs to be added. A teacher needs texts that go beyond the textbook and so year by year I am building my classroom library to offer those texts.
